My business doesn’t need PR – really?

You’re actually in denial if you say ‘our business doesn’t need PR’.  The reality is that you are ‘doing PR’ whether you think you are or not. It’s simply a case of whether you are actively managing it by intentionally leveraging PR activity to support your business objectives or not.  By ignoring it you leave your reputation to chance, you miss the opportunity to tell your story about the problems you solve, your reason for being, you miss opportunities to raise awareness, to educate and influence your customers, your staff, your shareholders/investors, your local community, your suppliers, your peers, your industry. You are in effect doing business with one arm tied behind your back. Isn’t it at least worth having an open mind and exploring?

So how does PR support business growth?

My business doesn’t need PR – really?

Visibility and Credibility: Effective PR increases a company’s visibility and credibility. Positive media coverage, award wins, influencer collaborations, guesting on podcasts, or speaking at conferences along with running well-managed events all work to enhance a company’s reputation, making it more attractive to customers, investors, and partners.

Brand Awareness: Effective PR campaigns raise awareness of a brand, its products, and its values among its target audiences. It can also increase its appeal as a great company to work for attracting the best talent .This increased awareness can lead to higher brand recognition and recall, augmenting other marketing activity and translating into increased sales and market share.

Relationship Building: PR is also about building and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders, including customers, investors, journalists, and industry influencers not forgetting your staff, suppliers and the local community. Strong relationships lead to opportunities for partnerships, collaborations, and favourable word-of-mouth referrals, all of which can contribute to business growth.

Crisis Management: PR plays a crucial role in managing crises and mitigating reputational damage when issues arise. A well-handled crisis can help a company maintain the trust of its customers and stakeholders, preventing long-term negative impacts on growth. Preparing for the worst is essential, studies show that bad news travels six times faster than good news. A crisis PR strategy means that you are in the best possible position to respond quickly should you be faced with a crisis. Being slow to respond sends a message that you either don’t care, have something to hide, or both.

Competitive Advantage: Businesses that effectively leverage PR may gain a competitive advantage over their rivals. By consistently communicating their unique value proposition and differentiators through PR channels, companies can position themselves as industry leaders and innovators, attracting customers and opportunities ahead of competitors. Familiarity builds trust and credibility and it’s reported that loved brands may grow up to three times faster.

Market Expansion: PR can support business growth by facilitating market expansion efforts. Whether launching new products or services, entering new geographic regions or targeting new customer segments, strategic PR campaigns can generate interest and excitement around a company’s expansion initiatives, driving growth into new markets.  And let’s not forget when you are looking at an exit strategy how well-known your brand is will impact the value of your company.
